Clergy Robes
74Minister Robes:Why is It Important?
A person that is appointed an official position inside the church are often required to wear minister robes. However, is it necessary to go ahead and wear one?
The practice of wearing and donning a robe depends on the church denomination and practice. Each kind of church would require a different style or color of robe. Despite this, a lot of people still ask why the robes are worn and whether they are important.
Basically, the robe has different functions. First, it helps to establish the position of the minister or the pastor and often diminishes his personality as an individual every time he stands before the pulpit and congregation.
It is essential for the personality of the individual to be downplayed and the position as representative of Christ be highlighted; the robes help to bring focus to the main object which is the worship of Christ.
Another important purpose of the robe is that it stands for the Lord himself. When a minister dons a robe, the minister is taken to represent Christ leading the people or congregation towards the Father.
Moreover, the robes create a sense of dignity and reverence whenever a church mass is held. They allow people to know that the service that’s being conducted is a solemn one and thus, entails their full attention.
There are plenty of other reasons why most churches make use of the robes and as mentioned, individual churches have their own reasons why they require their ministers to wear one.
Even though there are people who do not like the idea of having minister robes, no one can deny that it has become a central part of the church and will continue to be one for a long time.
Many people in the church denomination do support the wearing of minister robes. However, there are several people that also object to the idea of having one.
Even if most of the reasons might be subjective, there are a few common objections that people agree on. For example, people claim that the tradition is too “Roman Catholic.”
As you can see, there are also born-again denominations that make use of minister robes or even churches that are not associated with the Catholic religion. There are people in other denominations that are fond of the idea that they are wearing the same thing as the Catholics, especially since they have struggled long and hard to move away under the Catholic wing.
Another common reason that these people cite is that the robes make the minister look unapproachable. The truth is that the robe actually does the opposite; a minister wearing a robe in fact, makes him more approachable and distinguishable.
The robe essentially stands for itself since it helps to displace the person and instead highlights the minister’s role as representative for the Lord. Being able to stand out like that allows people to approach the right person.
One important proof of this is the wardrobe and uniform worn by doctors and nurses which helps to identify their position. People can easily ask for their advice because they know who to approach.
Having a minister wear minister robes is an essential tradition for the church and adds a lot of important elements to the faith.

I wonder why some people think that wearing robes is repulsive? I don't see anything wrong with it.
