Me and My Big Mouth by Joyce Meyer

Joyce Meyer’s book “Me and My Big Mouth” is as straightforward as it can get as it talks about a very important part of our body. But it’s not really just our mouths – lips, teeth, tongue – that the book focuses on. It is more on the duty and the power attached to our mouths, our speech. Many of us have been in trouble because of the things that came out of our mouths. Many of us have hurt a lot of people because we refuse to back off with our words. And many of us have unfortunately been slipping farther and farther from the teachings of God because we can’t control our big mouth.

Meyer states that one of the biggest problems that most Christians face now is that they could not take hold of their thoughts. Me and My Big Mouth does not really talk about what we say, but what pushes us to mention the things that we say.  It is not our tongue that shapes itself up to form words; it is the thoughts in our minds that form the messages that come out of our mouths. And what Meyer would like is for us to check our words, by checking our thoughts.

Me and My Big Mouth starts off by Meyer talking about “Learning to Speak God’s Language”. She talks about the importance of language in the generation of meaning. For example, she uses the phrase “Are you talking ABOUT your mountains or TO your mountains?” to magnify how majorly different two thoughts can be even with just the slightest difference in their structure. In the next chapter, the book also talks about how we can never really live a positive life if we don’t let go of our negative thoughts.

The message of the entire book is not really something we are unfamiliar of. We have always been aware of how we should take control of our thoughts before they take control of us. However, with Me and My Bid Mouth, Meyer introduces a new element in the equation: God. She says that even though we have a mind of our own, we should resist the calling to use them independently, because the only way to live a life for God is to have a mind according to his.

It is not only when we are socializing or meeting new friends that we should look after our words, it is on every single moment that we live. Me and My Big Mouth is definitely a must read, especially if you know you yourself could not really control the way you formulate your own thoughts. Remember, your mind is a very powerful tool. If you pursue on relying on your own thoughts and refuse to incline them towards the thoughts of God, then you are not fully living on the path of wisdom. Let Meyer give you a hand with Me and My Big Mouth.
